[MassTimes](https://masstimes.org/about) (masstimes.org) is a Catholic Mass-times directory run by the Mass Times Trust, a US charity that the Diocese of Lansing in Michigan operates. Its About page says it lists 121,000 churches in 201 countries and territories, kept current by dioceses, parishes and volunteers, and that it lists only Catholic churches confirmed by a diocese or religious order.

Canadian Churches lists churches of every Christian denomination in Canada, Catholic parishes included, with service times only from the churches themselves. Here is how the two compare, and when MassTimes is the better choice.

## Canadian Churches vs MassTimes

| Feature | Canadian Churches | MassTimes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Who runs it | An independent Canadian directory, not affiliated with any denomination | The Mass Times Trust, a US 501(c)(3) charity operated by the Diocese of Lansing, Michigan ([source](https://masstimes.org/about)) |
| Which churches | Every Christian denomination: Catholic (Roman and Eastern Catholic), Orthodox, Anglican, United, Lutheran, Presbyterian, evangelical and others, 26 in all | Catholic churches only, those on diocesan websites or confirmed by a diocese or religious order ([source](https://masstimes.org/about)) |
| Where | Canada only, by province, city, denomination and language | Worldwide: 121,000 churches in 201 countries and territories ([source](https://masstimes.org/about)) |
| How many churches | Churches of every Christian denomination in Canada, added from public listings (only with a phone number or the church’s own website) and by churches themselves. We are still adding churches; any church can add its listing free | 121,000 worldwide; no Canadian count published ([source](https://masstimes.org/about)) |
| Service times | Weekly service times only from the church (its own dashboard) or copied from the church’s own website, with the date we checked. Churches that publish times are listed first | Mass and Confession times, with the date each church was last updated ([source](https://masstimes.org/about)) |
| Searching | By city or church name, then by denomination or language community | By your location or any address; today’s Masses by time or all churches by distance; filters for language, rite and time of day ([source](https://masstimes.org/about)) |
| Christmas services | Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services added by the churches, by city, with a calendar feed | Not mentioned on its About page ([source](https://masstimes.org/about)) |
| App | No app; the website works on phones | iOS and Android apps ([source](https://masstimes.org/about)) |
| Correcting a listing | A church claims its listing with an email at its own website’s domain, then edits its times itself | Anyone can send an update through “Update This Parish’s Data”, after giving an email address ([source](https://masstimes.org/about)) |
| How it is paid for | Listings are free. Churches can pay for a Featured listing, labelled as paid. Ads on city and denomination pages, never on church pages | Donations from users; its release notes mention ads in the search results ([source](https://masstimes.org/about)) |
| Ratings and reviews | None | None mentioned on its About page ([source](https://masstimes.org/about)) |

## When MassTimes is the better choice

- You want a Catholic Mass today, sorted by start time: that is MassTimes’ default view.
- You are travelling outside Canada. MassTimes covers 201 countries and territories; we cover Canada only.
- You want Confession times, or to filter Masses by rite, language or time of day in one search.
- You want a phone app.

## When Canadian Churches fits better

- You are looking beyond Catholic parishes: Orthodox, Anglican, United, Lutheran, evangelical and other churches are listed in the same city pages.
- You want service times that came from the church itself, with the date they were checked.
- You are looking for a Christmas Eve or Christmas Day service near you.
- You run a church in Canada and want a free listing you can edit yourself.

## Check Mass times with the parish

MassTimes itself says churches routinely change their Mass times and that it is prudent to double-check the parish’s website. We agree, and the parish is the source either way. Every Catholic diocese and eparchy in Canada has its own website with its parishes: the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops keeps the [directory of dioceses, eparchies and ordinariates](https://www.cccb.ca/the-catholic-church-in-canada/directory-of-dioceses-eparchies-ordinariates/).

## Listing your parish

Parishes can be on both. On Canadian Churches a parish claims its listing with an email at its own website’s domain, then adds Sunday and weekday Mass times, languages and Christmas services itself. Nothing is copied into a listing without the date and the page it came from.

Run a church? List its Christmas services free: [Add your church’s Christmas services](https://canadianchurches.ca/christmas-services/add).

## Questions

### Is MassTimes free?

Yes, searching is free. MassTimes says it relies on donations from the people who use it, and its release notes mention ads in the search results.

### Does MassTimes list churches in Canada?

MassTimes searches any address in the world and says it lists churches in 201 countries and territories. It lists Catholic churches only and does not publish a Canadian count.

### Who keeps MassTimes up to date?

Dioceses, parishes and volunteers. Anyone can send a correction through the update link under a church’s Mass times, and MassTimes shows the date each church was last updated.

### Does Canadian Churches list Mass times?

Yes, when the parish gives them to us or publishes them on its own website. Each church page says where its times came from and when they were checked. We list every Christian denomination, not only Catholic parishes.
